ATOPIC DERMATITIS

Exogenous Types of Eczematous Dermatitis

  • Contact dermatitis - an eczematous eruption secondary to local exposure to a primary irritant or to an acquired allergic response to a sensitizing substance. The lesions can involve erythma, edema, papules, vesicles, oozing, and have sharply demarcated borders.

  • Photo contact dermatitis - an eczematous inflammatory eruption following exposure to a primary irritant and light. It is a type of delayed hypersensitivity. One example of this is seen in some sensitive individuals who use sunscreens that include PABA.

  • Infective dermatitis - a secondary bacterial infection that can occur in AD, nummular eczema, or seborrheic dermatitis. It extends out from the originally affected area and includes well-circumscribed eczematous plaques with vesicles, pustules, exudate and/or crusting on an erythematous base.
